Healing Through Art: Free in Color’s Youth Violence Prevention Project
At Free in Color, we believe in the power of creativity to heal, uplift, and transform lives. Over the past year, we launched an impactful initiative—funded by the Hennepin County Youth Violence Prevention Grant—in collaboration with the Organization of Liberians in Minnesota. This project combined art therapy and youth violence prevention, providing a safe and expressive space for young people in Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, and North Minneapolis.
Many of these youth are first-generation immigrants or have been impacted by generational trauma from the Liberian civil war. Through this program, they were given an opportunity to use art as a tool for healing, storytelling, and community building.
Art as a Tool for Healing
Over the course of eight weeks, participants engaged in individual and group art therapy sessions designed to help them process emotions, develop coping strategies, and foster resilience. Each session encouraged creative expression, allowing them to share their experiences in ways words often cannot capture.
From painting and drawing to mixed media and spoken word, art became a bridge to self-discovery and empowerment. The creative process helped participants navigate their emotions, connect with peers, and find a sense of belonging in a community that values their voices.
A Celebration of Growth & Expression
The program culminated in a powerful community showcase, where youth presented their artwork, shared personal stories, and engaged in open discussions. This wasn’t just an exhibition—it was a moment of empowerment, where each participant had the chance to reclaim their narrative and be heard.
Attendees witnessed firsthand how art can be a vehicle for change, helping youth channel their emotions into creativity rather than conflict. The event was a testament to the transformative power of art therapy and the importance of providing safe spaces for young people to express themselves.
What’s Next? Expanding the Impact
At Free in Color, we are committed to continuing this work. We are excited to expand our art therapy programs and create more opportunities for healing, expression, and community connection. By using art as a tool for social change, we aim to address mental health, community trauma, and youth empowerment on a larger scale.
